Unique Wedding Rituals Of Northeast India


Weddings are celebrated with great zeal and grandeur in India. A country that is diverse in its culture and traditions, every state has its own unique way of celebrating weddings. Similarly, Northeast India has some of the most peculiar, charming, and unique wedding rituals that are followed by various ethnic groups.

Each state has its tradition, and the wedding rituals differ based on culture, religion, and customs. Some of the unique wedding rituals of Northeast India –

Arunachal Pradesh

In the Nyishi community of Arunachal Pradesh, the bridegroom has to show his physical strength and endurance by carrying heavy logs of wood on his shoulder. This ritual is known as ‘Tagin’.

Assam

In the Bodo community of Assam, the bride has to take a dip in a nearby river or pond before the wedding ceremony. Later, it is followed by the exchange of rice and beetle leaves between the bride and the groom.

Manipur

In the Meitei community of Manipur, the mothers of the bride and groom wash their feet before they enter the wedding venue. This ritual is believed to represent the mother’s blessings and good luck.

Meghalaya

The Khasi community of Meghalaya has a unique matrilineal system. In this community, the bridegroom moves to the bride’s house and lives with her family. After the wedding, the bridegroom is considered the head of the family but has to take the mother’s name as his surname.

Mizoram

The Mizoram wedding rituals are simple yet fascinating. The bride and groom exchange a hand-woven cloth known as ‘Puan’, which represents their bond and unity.

Nagaland

In the Ao Naga community of Nagaland, a unique ‘tree pulling’ ritual is performed. The bridegroom has to pull a tree trunk, and the bride’s family tries to stop him. The ritual represents the groom’s strength and determination to marry the bride.

The Lepcha community of Sikkim follows a ritual known as ‘Mayel Lyang’. The bride, along with her family, has to visit the groom’s house with offerings of food and wine. The groom’s family then blesses the couple with barley and rice
