Celebrate Women’s Day In The Sassiest Way!

On 8th March, there’s a change in the air. Upon opening their eyes, women are met with tons of “Nari Shakti” messages, discounts on kitchen appliances, and thank you tweets from millionaires to their mum. Suddenly everything feels revolutionary. Brands have finally realised what women want: great discounts, ladies hours and vibes after so much activism and suffering. So much appreciation in one day almost makes you feel that patriarchy has been overthrown.

And so celebrating International Women’s Day seems a redundant affair. A tricky one too? Haven’t we already given women enough freedom? Most men are quick to question, ‘when is Men’s Day then?’

Well, to all our softies out there, women’s day is more than team lunches and sweet discounts.

Culture clash

Why does an Indian woman need empowerment day? Look we have so many Goddesses in Hindu culture unlike these westerners, we respect women anyway. And what’s with all this celebration, it’s all about selfies and cakes and a team lunch only for women. Too much time pass.

And with such cute little remarks, we forget the question of gender equality. Society considers this day to give women a token of appreciation. And celebrating women in general seems an outdated concept to many.

As for the problem with ‘why no international men’s day’, that’s because the highlighted need is for women. WE are not on equal footing. For an equal setting the focus has to be on WOMEN.

Getting free lunch or an appraisal? Better mentoring, more hiring or free chocolates?

Wouldn’t it be adorable if brands switched from short-lived, 24-hour marketing to long-term, systemic change-focused action plans. Although corporates have taken strong steps to empower women in workforce. They should meet well-intentioned groups and individuals to learn about the precise ways in which they are preparing and are willing to put in the extra effort needed to work for a more equal world.

Bring in more women to the table, give them the resources they’ll need to invest, and then introduce them to other female leaders. By growing their skills, companies can make an even more positive impact.

Nowadays HRs and CEOs are advocating for solid women representation. They must consistently work with women and champion women to excel in corporate culture. Make them more visible and keep the conversation going. Controversial or not, Women’s Day does spark some curiosity in everyone’s mind. It does leave an impression and call for action.

The Real Deal

No one needs a brand integration and brouhaha which is limited to 8th March only. We need to count on corporations and brands to create solid multi-action plans. Not only March 8 but also on the other 364 days of the year.

Having had the honour of working with and for women everyday, it is absolutely necessary to join us in celebrating and honouring them not only today but every day.
