What is the ‘Holi story’?

Holi was not always known as Holi, it was known as ‘Holika’ before.

The victory of good over evil is an attempted and tried topic written in early scriptures consistently. Holi is one such celebration with one main theme- good winning over evil. Nonetheless, the importance of the celebration has gone through huge changes over hundreds of years. Holi used to be a function performed by married women thanking God for their family’s prosperity where Raka, the full moon, was worshipped.

Now, there are two famous myths in our Indian Mythology

First Myth

The Holi story starts with lord Vishnu assassinating the Demon King, Hiranyakashipu. And the Demon King wanted to avenge his brother’s death, so he started tracking Lord Vishnu. Prahlad, Demon King’s son was opposite of him and he worshipped Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu decided to kill his son with the help of Holika, his sister who was immune to fire. He set fire and told Holika to jump into it with Prahalad. He believed in Lord Vishnu so much that even the fire could not burn him but Holika, who was immune to fire, burned to ashes. The evil burned away that day. That’s the myth that people follow and celebrate the Holi festival, beating away the evil.

Second Myth

Radha Krishna Holi– This myth is believed by many Bengali people. As we all known, Krishna loved to tease the girls in his village. But Radha loves his company and soon became his lover. He used to throw colours at the girls in his Village and soon other boys joined him and it became a joyful function. Both girls and boys enjoyed this function a lot and it became a festival soon after.

Why we celebrate Holi

The festival is most widely and openly celebrated in cities like Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, and while each city may celebrate slightly differently, you can expect to see plenty of colors, music, and dance.

The Holi Festival is celebrated as a way to welcome in spring, and also is seen as a new beginning where people can release all their inhibitions and start fresh. In a religious sense, the colors are rich with symbolism and have multiple meanings: they can mean a vibrant new life and even represent sin in a way. For some, washing off the dye at the end of the day can mean a new commitment to live well, cleansing oneself of evils and demons.
